CarGo Tram
In the late 90s Volkswagen (VW) had the idea to build a “transparent factory” in Dresden to make the production of auto mobiles visible to the public as an event. Precondition to realize this project was an adequate manufacturing site near to the city centre and the Old Town. The new factory required a belonging distribution centre. The centre was integrated to the cargo transport centre of Dresden (Dresdner Güterverkehrszentrum, GVZ) 4 km west of the factory. To avoid additional impacts related to extra goods traffic in the sensitive city centre, Volkswagen and the Transportation Services of Dresden (Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe, DVB AG) worked out an innovative logistic concept including distribution of material, component parts and products by tram.
Overall conditions to implement the innovative logistic concept were beneficial, in detail:
-
Spatial conditions led to limited stock capacity and waiting areas for trucks at the intended location of the "Transparent Factory". In the result combined shipment connected with interim storage was necessary.
-
Public, political and official wishes respectively demands for a logistic concept compatible with the city and urban environment was backed by the investor VW. It was agreed not to stress the sensitive area by delivery traffic with heavy trucks.
-
The “Transparent Factory” as well as the distribution centre, situated in the cargo transport centre of Dresden (GVZ), are very close to efficient tramcar lines. As a consequence, infrastructure investments could be kept within a limit.
-
The efficiency of the specialized "CarGoTram" was assured by the continuous flow of transportation required.
Within a very short period of time not only the logistic concept was worked out, but the CarGoTram were planned and constructed as well. Contractor was the "Schalker Eisenhütte Maschinenfabrik". Traction motors and the propulsion converters were produced by VEM Sachsenwerk Dresden and the centre of excellence for electrical equipment of the current Bombardier Transportation Bautzen. The client DVB AG finished off the rail brakes by himself in his own factories and produced single components for the re-used Tatra-bogie. The driver’s cab was completely constructed by ISB Salzwedel.
Since March 1rst, 2001, the good-transporting tram CarGoTram is in use. It doesn’t interfere with tram passenger transportation. It’s schedule is coordinated with those of passenger transportation. Like all transportations of DVB AG, it is controlled by the operational control system.
Except for the cassis all auto mobile components are supplied to the factory just in time by CarGoTram from the GVZ trough the city centre. It uses the ordinary tram line net. Only connecting lines to the GVZ and to the factory had to be built. The modern two blue 60 meter long trains can carry up to 214 m³ or 60 tons of goods each. Every trip of the CarGo Tram prevents three truck transfers trough the city centre and respective air pollution and noise.

The CarGo Tram-Project was created for very special edge conditions. It is not just like that transferable to other situations. Because of that, the DVB AG investigates other application areas for good-transporting trams in Dresden since the introduction of the CarGo Tram. In 2004, the DVB AG was integrated into an according research project of BMVBW.
The current concept is part of a “plan for keeping the air clean and action” for Dresden which explicitly envisions the encouragement to extend the usage of good-transporting trams.
The CarGo Tram fits in the overall enterprise philosophy of DVB AG to promote rising quality of live and attractiveness as well as sustainable development of Dresden.
