Tariff Zones
The entire Oberelbe Transport Network is divided into 21 tariff zones. One of them is the Dresden tariff zone which includes the entire city zone. The tariff system of Oberelbe Transport Network (VVO) is based on the number of the tariff zones you travel through.

Fare stages for season tickets
Season tickets are available in 5 fare stages. The fare stage you need depends on the number of tariff zones in which you intend to travel regularly.
Fare stage A1
You are just on the move in the Dresden tariff zone and don't leave this zone.
Fare stage A
For trips within one separate tariff zone (as printed on the ticket). For the Dresden tariff zone fare stage A1 is valid.
Fare stage A - Border area
In addition, fare stage A is valid for trips in a boarder area (as printed on the ticket).
Fare stage B
For trips within 2 neighbouring tariff zones (as printed on the ticket).
Fare stage C
For trips within one tariff zone (as printed on the ticket) and all neighboring tariff zones.
Example: A commuter from Dresden to Bad Schandau chooses Pirna tariff zone (70) as his regular zone. In this way he covers with a ticket at fare stage C all 3 tariff zones he travels through on his way. Besides he has the posibility to travel through the tariff zones Bad Gottleuba (71), Radeberg (31), Neustadt (73) and Freital (61).
Fare stage D
For trips in the entire VVO area.
Rules for the border zones
When crossing a tariff zone border, the traveller has to pay the price for 2 tariff zones. In order to “soften” this price jump (from fare stage 1 to fare stage 2) “border areas” were laid down for neighbouring tariff zones. This is convinient for you if you board a train or bus shortly before a tariff zone border and reach your destination shortly after. The border areas are of varying sizes and take the network and travelling habits into account.
The border areas are noted on your ticket when the ticket is validated or on monthly passes which are imprinted with the word “Grenzraum”. Boundary stops are marked in the network map of VVO with a blue semicircle and in the timetable with the letters "GR."
If your journey is only between two stops located within a border area (when you are going from stop A to stop B), then you only need a ticket for one tariff zone, i.e. fare stage 1 (when using a single ticket) or fare stage A (when using a monthly or yearly pass).
Please note that one-day tickets are not issued solely for the use of the border areas!
Example: If you go from Dresden-Prohlis to Heidenau-Pechhütte, then you use a ticket at fare stage A. The rules for the border areas are valid here. You stay within the border area.
Example: If you go from Dresden-Prohlis to Pirna, then you use a ticket at fare stage B. The rules for the border areas are NOT valid here. You leave border area of Pirna tariff zone.
